Illinois scored twice in the top of the first and pulled away with a five-run seventh, downing Liberty 8-2 on Friday at Eddie C. Moore Complex.

The Fighting Illini (1-0) opened their season with a win at the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic, while the Lady Flames fell to 0-2 with losses to Kentucky and Illinois.

Illinois is one of 13 straight Power 5 opponents for the Lady Flames to open the 2020 season. Liberty plays a total of 21 games versus Power 5 teams this season.

Notable Numbers
- Illinois outhit Liberty, 11-4. The Lady Flames committed four errors compared to one for the Fighting Illini.

- Illinois pitcher Sydney Sickels (1-0) earned the win, striking out three and yielding three hits in six innings. Morgan Scivally allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of relief.

- Megan Johnson made her first start as a Lady Flame after transferring from Butler Community College. Johnson (0-1) drew the loss, allowing three unearned runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Emily Kirby allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

- Avrey Steiner batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Danielle Davis hit 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. Shelby Stauffenberg batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

- Four different Lady Flames registered hits, including Denay Griffin, who hit her first career home run in the seventh.

Turning Point
- Illinois got on the board with two unearned runs in the top of the first. The Fighting Illini pulled away with a five-run seventh.

- For the second game in a row, Liberty scored two runs in the seventh inning. Griffin hit a pinch-hit two-run homer for Liberty's only scoring.

- Illinois now leads the all-time series 2-0 over Liberty, as the first meeting between these two teams came on March 14, 2003.

- Griffin is the first Lady Flame to record a pinch-hit homer since Sydnei Lester against Georgetown on Feb. 12, 2012.
