2020 ASUN Conference Lacrosse Preseason Honors and Awards

Liberty lacrosse seniors Carly White and Sarah Steenson were both honored on the ASUN Lacrosse Preseason All-Conference team, Friday afternoon. In addition, the Lady Flames were picked to finish second in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll.

"We have a group of seniors this year that have that intangible ability to lead with their hearts while staying strong in their convictions," Liberty Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle said. "These young women are strong, hungry and will not settle for less than our best. I couldn't be prouder to lead this team and to have the opportunity to watch them take this program to places we've never been. February 8th can't come soon enough."

White, a captain and midfielder who hails from Marietta, Ga., has now made the preseason all-conference squad in back-to-back years in Liberty's first two seasons in the ASUN Conference. The senior was also named the ASUN Lacrosse Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year. White is the only player in program history to earn first team all-conference distinction in each of her first three seasons. She earned ASUN All-Conference first team honors as a junior in 2019.

White was also a VaSID All-State second team honoree, two-time ASUN Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week a year ago. She enters her senior season ranked ninth in program history in career goals (90), fourth in assists (56), seventh in points (146), fourth in ground balls (147), third in draw controls (165), fifth in caused turnovers (73) and tied for third in free-position goals (23).

Steenson, a defender from Haymarket, Va., set career highs in caused turnovers (33) and ground balls (32) in 2019 for a Liberty squad which led the country in caused turnovers per game (15.79) for a second straight year and finished eighth in the nation in ground balls per game (21.53).

Individually, she finished 31st in the country in caused turnovers per game (1.74) and earned ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honors one time. Steenson was named to the ASUN All-Conference second team for her efforts.

"I'm really excited for Sarah and Carly to be selected to the preseason all-conference team. They have worked really hard and it shows," Nangle stated. "We have a very well-rounded team with lots of talent in every position. I'm excited to put it all together and compete at the highest level this season!"

Liberty received one first-place vote and 55 points in the poll, which is voted on by ASUN head coaches. Three-time defending ASUN champion Jacksonville received six first-place votes and 62 points for first place. Coastal Carolina (one first-place vote, 47 points), Kennesaw State (42 points), Stetson (32 points), Kent State (25 points), Akron (16 points) and Howard (nine points) round out the poll.

The Lady Flames kick off their spring season at Oregon, Feb. 8. Liberty will open its home season against Furman on Feb. 19. The Lady Flames' first ASUN match will be at Kennesaw State on March 29. The 2020 ASUN Lacrosse Championship will be held from April 29-May 2 at Kennesaw State's Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.

In 2019, Liberty enjoyed its best season in program history with a 14-5 overall record and 5-1 mark in the ASUN. The Lady Flames earned the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament and earned a runner-up finish. Liberty closed out the year at No. 31 in the final NCAA Lacrosse RPI listing, its best finish at season's end in program history.
