Game Day Central: New Mexico State Game Note vs. New Mexico State
The Flames posted a 20-13 victory at New Mexico State on Oct. 5. Liberty is looking to defeat the same team twice during a single season for the first time in program history.
"4 Downs" with the Aggies
1. Liberty needs a victory on Saturday to achieve bowl eligibility for the first time. The Flames will face a New Mexico State team coming off its first FBS win of the season, a 44-35 home triumph over UTEP last Saturday. Liberty will look to contain Jason Huntley, who is tied for No. 1 in New Mexico State with five career kickoff returns for TDs. One of those came at Liberty last season.
2. Flames QB Stephen Calvert threw two interceptions at Virginia last Saturday, snapping his string of 295 consecutive pass attempts without throwing a pick. During his three matchups with New Mexico State, Calvert is 65-of-116 passing for 692 yards with five TDs and three interceptions. Fellow senior Frankie Hickson has posted a pair of 100-yard games against the Aggies, totaling 66 carries for 343 yards and a score during the head-to-head series.
3. New Mexico State topped Utah State 26-20 in the 2017 Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl, remaining unbeaten (3-0-1) all-time in bowl games. However, the Aggies have gone 5-18 since that bowl game triumph and are guaranteed to win three or fewer games for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
4. Playing at Williams Stadium for the first time since Oct. 19, Liberty has won four consecutive home games. The Flames are now 9-2 at home as an FBS member and are seeking their first five-game home winning streak since a run of six straight home wins spanning Sept. 5, 2015 through Sept. 10, 2016. Conversely, New Mexico State is looking to snap its 10-game road losing streak.
