Ferreira and Wilson went 3-0 in doubles this weekend.
The Liberty men's tennis team wrapped up its final day at the Flames Invitational with an unbeaten doubles session and five singles wins, Sunday at the Cook Tennis Center.
The Flames concluded the three-day home invitational with 28 singles victories and seven doubles triumphs.
"Responding to adversity and competing to the best of our ability is our standard for practice and matches," said Liberty third-year head coach Derek Schwandt. "Several guys did this over the tournament on a consistent basis. We are excited about the spring season."
Each of Liberty's three doubles teams won on Sunday. With all three teams competing on the Cook Tennis Center's stadium courts 1-3 on Sunday morning, the Flames' Josh Wilson and Goncalo Ferreira completed a 3-0 weekend in doubles by defeating Navy's Matthew Lee and Jan Kjelberg in a tiebreaker. 7-6 (5). The pairing finishes the fall with a 6-0 mark.
Shortly later, the Flames' Ian Sturgill and William Barker overcame a 5-2 deficit to Longwood's Ignacio Sandoval and Rosen Naydenov to win 7-5. Finally, Liberty's Nicaise Muamba and Deji Thomas-Smith defeated Gavin Segraves and Christian Pumpelly 7-5 to close the weekend with a 2-1 record. Muamba and Thomas-Smith led all Flames doubles units this fall with seven wins (7-2 mark).
Liberty managed to win five singles matches on Sunday despite having three matches in which teammates faced one another. Players were grouped in pods on Friday and Saturday, with winners of each pod playing a winner from the next best pod on the final day.
The Flames' Wilson, winner of red pod 2, squared off with his teammate, No. 65 Nicaise Muamba, winner of red pod 1. Wilson prevailed in that match 6-3, 6-2 to finish the weekend with a 4-0 singles record.
Flames sophomore Chase Burton, winner of white pod 2, faced off with white pod 1 victor Guillermo Cagigas of Longwood. Burton cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory and won all four of his singles bouts, this weekend, in the final fall tournament of his Liberty career.
Liberty's Deji Thomas-Smith, the top performer in blue pod 2 (2-1 record), squared off against Longwood's Ernest Rocabert (3-0 blue pod 1) on Sunday. Thomas-Smith was victorious in two sets (6-2, 6-3).
The Flames' Joseph Emerson and William Barker, both sporting 3-0 records in the gray pod coming in, played against other on the final day. Emerson edged Barker 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to finish the tournament 4-0.
Liberty's Ian Sturgill, who went 2-1 in blue pod 1, took on teammate Steve Mundt, who was 2-1 in blue pod 2. Sturgill prevailed in three sets over Mundt, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
