No. 2 seed Old Dominion topped No. 3 seed Liberty 3-1 in the semifinals of the 2019 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium, Friday afternoon.

The loss brings the 19th-ranked Lady Flames' record to 10-8 on the year and ends their season. Meanwhile, 18th-ranked Old Dominion improves to 11-6 this season and advances to Sunday's championship game against top-seeded and third-ranked Connecticut (17-3). The Huskies bested No. 4 seed Providence 2-0 in Friday's first semifinal on a day which had temperatures in the mid 30s and strong winds for both games.

Turning Point
The two teams traded goals in the opening 20 minutes, with the Monarchs' Nicole Fredericks scoring first on a penalty corner at the 5:02 mark to give ODU a 1-0 lead. The Lady Flames answered early in the second quarter at the 18:49 mark when midfielder Lizzie Hamlett tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty corner tip off a feed from Daniella Rhodes. It was the sophomore's fifth goal of the season.

However, Old Dominion responded just before halftime when Ashleigh Thomas sent a ball in to Riley Taylor, who backhanded a shot past Liberty goalkeeper Allison Schaefer from in close to make it 2-1 Monarchs in the 28th minute.

ODU's Tori Harwood tacked on an insurance goal for the Monarchs in the third quarter off a Liberty turnover to make it 3-1 at the 40:27 mark.

Key Stats & Notes

  • This is the first time since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2016 that Liberty will not play in the title game. The Lady Flames won semifinal games in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Liberty is now 3-4 (.429) in its four years in the BIG EAST Tournament.
  • Old Dominion outshot Liberty 11-8 in the match. Both teams drew four penalty corners, with each squad scoring one short corner goal.
  • Lady Flames freshman Daniella Rhodes tallied an assist to go along with a game-high four shots (two on goal) in the contest. The BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference selection led the team in goals (13), assists (9), points (35), game-winning goals (3) and shots on goal (51) this fall.
  • The all-time series between Liberty and ODU is now even at 4-4. The Monarchs won both meetings in 2019.
  • Liberty went 3-7 over its final 10 games of the season while taking on eight ranked foes. The Lady Flames were 1-8 against ranked counterparts and 9-0 against unranked squads this year.
  • Senior Allison Schaefer wraps up her Liberty career as the all-time winningest goalkeeper with 39 victories. She is also the program's all-time saves leader with 354 and career shutouts leader with 16. Schaefer started all 74 contests during her tenure with the Lady Flames.
  • Seniors Mallory Fortenbaugh and Annika Roberts also appeared in all 74 matches during their time at Liberty. Fortenbaugh closes her career with 12 goals, 23 assists, 47 points and three game-winning goals. Her 23 assists are the fifth most in school history.
  • Liberty's senior class won a combined 39 games over its four years and posted a 21-7 mark in BIG EAST regular season matches.
