Fortenbaugh is the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.

Liberty Flames field hockey senior Mallory Fortenbaugh earned the distinction of BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

This is Fortenbaugh's first-ever defensive player of the week honor. The senior from Millerstown, Pa., has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times during her career, including once this season on Oct. 14.

Fortenbaugh and the Liberty defense recorded their seventh shutout of the season in No. 18 Liberty's 2-0 home win over No. 25 Providence, last Friday. The victory helped the Lady Flames clinch the No. 3 seed for this weekend's BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. On Sunday against No. 4 Duke, Fortenbaugh scored a first half goal on her Senior Day, her fifth goal of the season.

Fortenbaugh and Liberty's defensive unit yielded four total goals in three games last week, all against ranked foes (No. 6 Virginia, No. 25 Providence and No. 4 Duke). The Lady Flames have surrendered 1.35 goals per game in 2019. Their seven shutouts are the second most in a season in program history, behind only the 2013 squad's eight clean sheets.

On the season, Fortenbaugh is tied for third on the team with four assists and is fifth in both goals (5) and points (14).

Liberty closes out the regular season with 10 BIG EAST Field Hockey weekly award winners, including: three freshman of the week honorees (all Daniella Rhodes), two offensive player of the week honorees (Rhodes and Jill Bolton), one defensive player of the week recipient (Fortenbaugh) and four weekly honor roll members (Rhodes, Fortenbaugh, Ashley Dykema and Allison Schaefer).

The No. 18 Lady Flames (10-7, 5-2 BIG EAST) will begin preparing for the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, which begins on Friday at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium in Hamden, Conn. No. 3 seed Liberty will face No. 2 seed and 19th-ranked Old Dominion (10-6, 6-1 BIG EAST) in a semifinal match on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner of that contest will meet the winner of No. 1 seed UConn (16-3, 7-0 BIG EAST) and No. 4 seed Providence (12-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) in Sunday's title game at 1 p.m.
