Flames Cap Off Fall Schedule With 6th-Place Finish

No. 37 Liberty completed its five-tournament fall schedule with a sixth-place finish at the 2019 Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.

The Flames carded a program record 29-under par 823 (272-272-279) at the Ka'anapali Golf Course; Royal Ka'anapali Course (par 71, 6,700 yards).

No. 5 Oklahoma captured the team title with a winning score of 47-under par 805 (268-274-263), which included a 21-under par 263 during the final round.

Liberty was led by Alexandre Fuchs, who finished tied for eighth place with a 10-under par 203 (68-67-68).

The Flames will now have three months to prepare for the remainder of their 2019-20 schedule. Liberty will begin the spring portion of its schedule when they participate in the Sea Best Invitational, Feb. 3-4, at the TPC Sawgrass – Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.  

Round Recap – Liberty's Starting Five:
• Alexandre Fuchs: T8 10-under par 203 (68-67-68)
• Jonathan Yaun: T18 7-under par 206 (67-65-74)
• Connor Polender: T46 2-under par 211 (67-69-75)
• Ervin Chang: T53 1-under par 212 (73-73-66)
• Zach Barbin: T53 1-under par 212 (70-71-71)

Field Reflections:

• Twelve of the 20 teams in the field finished the tournament in red figures.
• Oklahoma completed the Hawaii-hosted tournament five shots clear of No. 18 Washington, who finished the event with a 42-under par 810 (274-267-269).
• No. 23 UCLA (35-under par 817), No. 19 Georgia (33-under par 819) and No. 31 South Carolina (32-under par 820) finished just ahead of the Flames.
• Georgia's Trent Phillips (65-64-64) and Oklahoma's Quade Cummins (65-66-62) finished tied atop the 119-man individual leaderboard.
• Phillips claimed medalist honors, winning on the seventh playoff hole.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes:

• The Flames finished the tournament with the best 54-hole team total in program history.
• Liberty's previous 54-hole record was an 837, carded by the Flames at the James Madison Invitational (Oct. 10-11, 2005) and at the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Golf Tournament (Oct. 23-25, 2011).
• The Flames continued to excel on the par-5 holes, finishing the tournament with a 31-under par 4.31 scoring average.
• Fuchs' 10-under par 203 set a new career 54-hole low for the junior and is tied for the fifth-best individual 54-hole total in school history.
• Previously, the junior had carded an 8-under par 208 twice during the 2018-19 season (Intercollegiate at The Grove – Oct. 7-9; Linger Longer Invitational; March 15-17).
• Fuchs individually led the 119-man field in par-5 scoring average (11-under par/3.78).
• Jonathan Yaun, who led the Flames during the first two days of competition, was still in the top 10 before posting bogeys on three of his last four holes.
• The sophomore finished the event tied for 18th place with a 7-under par 206 (67-65-74).
• Liberty's Ervin Chang had the shot of the tournament on Sunday, holing out on his second shot on the par-5, No. 9 hole (485 yards) for an albatross.
