Liberty Takes 3 Doubles Matches on First Day of Regional

On day one of the 2019 ITA Women's Atlantic Region Championships, the Lady Flames tennis team posted a 3-1 doubles record and also won four singles bouts at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Liberty duo of Kalani Soli and Eloise Saraty defeated Longwood's Yulia Almiron and Emma Nurgaziera by an 8-3 score. They will move on to face No. 14 seed Charlotte Madison and Vitoria Okuyama in the round of 32, tomorrow.

The Lady Flames' Tiffany Nguyen and Micaela Ode Mitre also advanced to the round of 32 with an 8-4 triumph against Temple's Oleksandra Doroshenko and Stefaniya Surikova. They will square off with third-seeded Vivian Glozman and Chloe Gullickson of Virginia on Saturday.

Liberty's Alexandra Almborg and Nasha Ghajar prevailed 8-3 over Georgetown's Elena De Santis and Anna Short in their first round match. The duo will take on No. 11 seed Emily Dunbar and Kiana Marshall of Richmond on day two.

Liberty's Almborg, Ode Mitre, Nguyen and Lovato each picked up singles victories on day one. Almborg took her first match by a 6-2, 6-1 score over Richmond's Dessi Zlateva before falling to Caragh Courtney of Delaware 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Ode Mitre bested Annie Clark of Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of qualifying before dropping her second match to Radford's Drousile Dzeubou in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Her doubles partner Nguyen defeated Maryland's Chloe Hamlin 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of qualifying. However, Nguyen fell to Navy's Jillian Taggart 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the second round.

Finally, Lovato won in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 7-5) versus her counterpart Kat Lyman of West Virginia in her first match. Navy's Kacey Moore got past Lovato in her second match by a 7-6 (3), 6-1.

Day two of the regional will feature the doubles rounds of 32 and 16 and the singles main draw round of 64. Liberty's Soli (No. 13 seed) and Caisey Lee Emery will represent the team in the singles main draw.
