Pair of Liberty Doubles Units Enjoy Success on Day 2 of ITA Atlantic Regional

Two Liberty Flames doubles teams advanced by winning round of 64 and 32 matches on Friday at the ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Virginia.

The duos of Nicaise Muamba and Deji Thomas-Smith and William Barker and Goncalo Ferreira each claimed two matches on the second day of competition at the regional. Both pairings will move on to tomorrow's round of 16.

The five-day event is being contested at the Snyder Courts, Dell Courts, and Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville.

Muamba and Thomas-Smith, who are seeded 14th in the doubles main draw, defeated Radford's Karl Katlaps and William Crane by an 8-5 count in the opening round. In second round action, the Flames pairing edged Virginia Tech's Ryan Kros and Michael Shepheard 8-6. Muamba and Thomas-Smith will meet No. 6 seed Luca Maldoner and Tomislav Podvinski of Old Dominion in the round of 16, Saturday.

Barker and Ferreira, playing in competitive doubles matches for the first time as a duo, defeated Longwood's Rosen Naydenov and Ignacio Sandoval 8-2 in the round of 64. They went on to top George Mason's Ryan Charles and Rithik Sardana 8-3 in the second round. Barker and Ferreira will square off with eighth-seeded Inigo Toree Martin and Rayane Stable of VCU, tomorrow afternoon in the round of 16.

After receiving a double bye to the singles round of 64, the Flames' Nicaise Muamba bested Georgetown's Connor Lee 6-1, 6-2 on Friday. Muamba, the 65th-ranked singles player in the nation and top seed at the regional, will face off against George Washington's Ryan Navarro in the round of 32, tomorrow.

On Thursday, Chase Burton, Goncalo Ferreira, Ian Sturgill and Deji Thomas-Smith all won two singles matches (round of 256 and 128) to qualify for the singles main draw round of 64. However, all four players dropped their third round matches on Friday.

Burton fell to No. 2 seed Gianni Ross (No. 111 singles player in country) of Virginia in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Ferreira fell to Navy's Andrew Ton 6-4, 7-6 (3). Sturgill was edged by ODU's Younes Lalami 7-6 (3), 6-4. Thomas-Smith lost to ODU's Podvinski 6-2, 6-3.

Day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional will feature two rounds of singles (round of 32 and round of 16), followed by the doubles round of 16.
