No. 15 Liberty Earns 3-0 Road Shutout at Longwood, Sunday

The 15th-ranked Liberty field hockey team scored three times over the final 20 minutes of the game to defeat the host Longwood Lancers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.

Liberty's fifth shutout of the season brings its record to 8-3 overall and snaps a two-game losing skid. The Lancers fall to 6-6 on the year.

Turning Point
After outshooting the Lancers 11-0 in the opening half, Liberty finally broke through in the third quarter. The Lady Flames' Mallory Fortenbaugh scored on a penalty corner at the 40:03 mark to make it 1-0 Liberty. Fortenbaugh struck again in the fourth quarter (48th minute) with her second goal of the game on another short corner.

Both goals were nearly identical plays in which Daniella Rhodes found Fortenbaugh with passes towards the left post, which Fortenbaugh one-timed into the cage. The Liberty senior set a new career single-game high with her two goals on Sunday. With four goals this season, Fortenbaugh has also matched a single-season career high.

Junior Jill Bolton forced a Longwood turnover in the closing seconds of the contest, which she capitalized on and blasted a shot into left side of the goal with just 17.3 seconds remaining. The forward's marker, her seventh of the season, settled the outcome at 3-0.

 

Key Stats & Notes

  • The Lady Flames outshot the Lancers 21-2 in the contest and held a 12-0 edge in shots on goal. Rhodes paced all players with five total shots, while Klopp led Liberty with three shots on goal.
  • Liberty drew 11 penalty corners (eight in the second half) in the match, compared to just two for Longwood.
  • Rhodes notched her sixth and seventh assists of the season in the match. The freshman from Durban, South Africa leads the team in goals (9), assists (7) and points (25).
  • Liberty senior goalkeeper Allison Schaefer and the defense notched their fifth shutout of 2019. Schaefer's win was the 37th of her career, tying the program record for most career wins in goal. Her next victory will allow her to surpass Mallory Cuccio (37 wins, 2012-15) into first place in school history.
  • The Lady Flames are now 6-4 all-time against the Lancers following Sunday's triumph.
