Fuchs Atop the Day 1 Leaderboard at the Marquette Intercollegiate

Liberty's Alexandre Fuchs fired his low round of the season on Sunday and leads the 2019 Marquette Intercollegiate following day one of the three-day tournament.

The junior carded a 4-under par 68 during his first trip around the famed Erin Hills Golf Course (par 72, 7,515 yards), site of the 117th U.S. Open in 2017.

Overall, Liberty finds itself in fourth place after a 9-over par 297. The Flames are five shots off the overall pace set by UCLA, who opened the event with a 4-over par 292.

Round two gets underway tomorrow at 9 a.m. CST and the Flames will be sent off the No. 1 tee (par 5, 560 yards) along with Miami (Ohio) and Wisconsin.

Field Reflections:

• All 12 teams in the field finished the day with an over-par score with the former national championship course playing at a 76.34 stroke average on Sunday.
• Only 11 shots separate clubhouse leader UCLA (292) and Ball State, the 12th place team who shot a 15-over par 303 during the opening round.
• Fuchs is joined by three other players who managed to break par on Sunday, as only four players in the 72-man field posted an under-par score.
• Fuchs leads Georgia State's Ashton Poole by one stroke (-3/69), followed by Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn (-2/70) and Northwestern's David Nyfjall (-1/71).

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes:

• After going birdie-bogey on his third and fourth holes of the day (No. 12/13), Fuchs finished the day with four more birdies over his closing 14 holes.
• Fuchs tied Eichhorn and Northwestern's Everton Hawkins for the lead in the field with five birdies during Sunday's opening round.
• Fuchs was Liberty's lone bright spot on the day, as the remaining five members of Liberty's starting five this week carded a combined five birdies.
• Isaac Simmons ranked second for the Flames on the day with a 3-over par 75, leaving the sophomore in a share for 28th place.
