Liberty's Balanced Attack Leads to Win over North Alabama

Liberty pulled off the ASUN sweep this weekend as they defeated North Alabama, 3-0, for its second shutout win this week. The Lady Flames improve to 7-5-2 and 3-1 in the ASUN while North Alabama drops to 4-8 and 0-3 in conference.

Turning Point

After Kailey Neef scored the first goal for Liberty in the first half, Liberty was able to set the tone from then on as they held possession for 57 percent of the game. While Liberty's backline and goalkeeper Melody Jayroe was holding down the fort limiting the ASUN leading goal scorer, Shelby Wall, to just one shot on goal, Liberty's offense was exceptional as nine different players attempted a shot for the Lady Flames, scoring a trio of goals.

Key Stats & Notes

  • Jayroe ranks fourth all-time on Liberty's all-time career shutout list with 17 shutouts.
  • Jayroe and Liberty's backline have not allowed a goal in the last 495 minutes of regulation.
  • Jayroe recorded seven saves.
  • Liberty's backline held ASUN leading goal scorer, Shelby Wall, to just one shot on goal.
  • Liberty still has not been beaten at home in over a year (Sept. 23, 2018 vs. NJIT).
  • Kailey Neef led Liberty with three points scoring a goal along with an assist.
  • Neef's goal was Liberty's first goal during the first half since Sept. 19, 2019 against James Madison, ending a 230 minutes drought.
  • Nicole Crutchfield scored her first collegiate goal and fourth career point (Recorded two assists at North Carolina).
  • Liberty's backline has surpassed last year's total shutouts (4) just 14 games into this season.

Thoughts from Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer

"The game came in a little bit of waves. I thought we started pretty well and created some chances and then lost a little bit of the momentum and gained it back as the (first) half wore on. It was great to get that goal before the first half ended and that set the tone for us. We created a lot of chances today and credit to their keeper for making some big saves but it was great to see our girls come off a big win against Lipscomb, playing Friday night while North Alabama didn't play Friday and they were fresh so to get a 3-0 shutout is awesome."

Up Next
