(L-R): Felix Kandie, Adelyn Ackley, Joe Spitzer
Liberty made a clean sweep of the ASUN Conference cross country weekly awards on Wednesday. For the third time this season, Adelyn Ackley (ASUN Women's Runner of the Week and Women's Freshman of the Week) and Felix Kandie (ASUN Men's Runner of the Week) claimed three of the four honors. Additionally, Joe Spitzer became the Flames' first-ever ASUN Men's Freshman of the Week.
A native of Mears, Mich., Ackley successfully stepped up to the 6K distance at Friday's Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. She clocked a time of 20:45.2 for seventh place of 149 runners, making her the only freshman to place inside the top 10. Ackley matched the best-ever finish by a Lady Flame at this meet and became the fourth fastest runner in program history at the 6K distance.
Kandie clocked an 8K personal-best time of 24:09.2 for third place of 161 runners in Friday's men's race. The Eldoret, Kenya native's third top-three finish in as many races represented the best placement ever by a Liberty runner at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational.
Spitzer's personal-best 8K clocking (25:06.8) was good for 41st place overall, eighth among freshmen and third among the Flames. The redshirt freshman from Versailles, Ohio is in the midst of a breakthrough season after seeing his 2018 campaign halted by injury after just one race.
Liberty will be back in action on Oct. 19, heading to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Invitational. The day's first race will begin at 11 a.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the 2019 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
