Muamba won in straight sets on Friday.
Liberty's Nicaise Muamba topped Alabama State's Alexis Collard in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) on the second day of the Oracle ITA Masters at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Muamba, the 65th-ranked singles player in the country, won 64 percent (58-of-90) of the points in the match and held sizeable edges in first serve points won (80 percent to 62 percent), second return points won (78 percent to 20 percent) and game points won (89 percent to 57 percent).
Muamba was last year's ASUN Player of the Week, while Collard was representing the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) at the event. Collard and the Alabama State Hornets won the SWAC, last spring, and competed in the 2019 Division I Men's Tennis Championship.
Muamba is now 1-1 in singles at the prestigious tournament featuring several of the best players in the country. He advances to Saturday's consolation draw quarterfinals, where he will take on No. 9 seed Gui Osorio of San Diego. Osorio is the No. 28-ranked singles player in the nation and topped Longwood's Amadeo Blasco in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) on Friday.
If Muamba defeats Osorio on Saturday, he will play in the consolation semifinal round later in the day.
