No. 13 Liberty achieved its milestone 100th victory in program history on Friday afternoon with a 5-0 blanking of the visiting Villanova Wildcats in its BIG EAST home opener at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.

The victory improves the Lady Flames' record to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST competition. Liberty is 6-1 for the first time in program history and a perfect 5-0 at home as well. The Wildcats drop to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference.

The Liberty field hockey program is in its ninth year and now holds a 100-63 (.613) mark following the milestone win on Friday.

Liberty now has four shutouts on the year and featured four different goal scorers in today's victory. Freshman forward Daniella Rhodes scored her sixth and seventh goals of the year, while junior forward Alivia Klopp found the back of the cage for the fifth time this year. Defender Ashley Dykema tallied her first marker of the season, and senior forward Sydney Baffone notched her first career goal in the win. Redshirt junior midfielder Kendra Jones matched a program record with three assists in the game.

Turning Point
Liberty wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, striking at the 1:53 mark of the contest. Kendra Jones sent a pass into the circle intended for Daniella Rhodes, which Rhodes one-timed past Villanova Jordan McGinley into the goal cage for a 1-0 Lady Flames lead.

Just over three minutes later, Liberty drew its first penalty corner and converted. Following an insert from Mallory Fortenbaugh and a stick stop from Kendra Jones, Ashley Dykema ripped a shot past McGinley for a 2-0 advantage for the hosts at the 5:09 mark. The Lady Flames led 3-0 at the half and held Villanova without a shot in the second stanza.

Key Stats & Notes

  • Liberty recorded a season-high 25 shots in the contest and held Villanova to two total shots in the game (one on goal). This is the second straight game in which the Lady Flames have held their opposition to two shots. Liberty has only yielded eight total shots over the past three games and just 37 shots (18 on goal) in seven games, this season.
  • Sydney Baffone's goal came with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The senior from Newark, Del., scored after Jill Bolton's initial shot was blocked. Baffone's marker made it 5-0 Lady Flames.
  • This was Rhodes' second multiple-goal game of the year. The freshman from Durban, South Africa, leads the team in goals (7), assists (5) and points (19).  
  • Goalkeeper Allison Schaefer had her fourth shutout of the season and 13th of her career. The Millersville, Pa., native has an impressive 0.57 goals-against-average along with a .778 save percentage.
  • Liberty is now 5-0 all-time against Villanova and 4-0 when facing the Wildcats in BIG EAST action. In those four league wins, the Lady Flames have outscored Villanova 17-1.
  • This is the fifth time this season that Liberty has tallied four or more goals. In all five instances, the Lady Flames have featured four or more different goal scorers.
  • Junior forward Jill Bolton paced all players with nine shots (six on goal). Nine different players notched shots in the game, including the first career shot from freshman Mackinzie Thompson.

 

Up Next
Liberty will be back in action next weekend in the Northeast. The Lady Flames will play a BIG EAST contest at Quinnipiac (3-5, 1-1 BIG EAST), next Friday at 3 p.m. The game will be played at Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium in Hamden, Conn., site of the 2019 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship (Nov. 8-10).

Following that match, the Lady Flames will head to the Boston area for a match at No. 16 Harvard (3-2) at 1 p.m. on Oct. 6.
