Soli is competing at the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters event this week.
Liberty senior Kalani Soli dropped her opening round match to nationally-ranked Jessica Failla of Pepperdine on day one of the Oracle ITA Masters at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Soli fell 6-1, 6-1 to Failla, the 32nd-ranked player in the country in the preseason Oracle/ITA Division I Women's Rankings, in her first match of the 2019-20 season on Thursday. Soli is entered as the No. 20 seed in the singles main draw, while Failla is the No. 13 seed. The Oracle ITA Masters features elite competition with seven of the top-25 Division I women's tennis players entered in the field.
Failla won 64 percent of the points in the match and also held advantages in first serve points won (68 percent to 48 percent), second serve points won (75 percent to 22 percent), first return points won (52 percent to 32 percent) and second return points won (78 percent to 25 percent). Soli edged Failla in first serve (78 percent to 70 percent) and second serve (100 percent to 92 percent) percentage.
Soli will meet Grand Canyon's Emilia Occhipinti in a backdraw match on Friday. Occhipinti fell to Georgia's Katarina Jokic, the No. 1-ranked player in the nation, in two sets (6-4, 6-3) on Thursday. Soli, a 2019 ASUN All-Conference first team member, was invited to the event as the top returning player from the ASUN.
In doubles, Soli and Flames men's tennis junior Nicaise Muamba lost their first round contest in a tiebreaker to Jessica Livianu and Aditya Vashistha of St. John's, 7-6 (3). That match was also contested at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Malibu Racquet Club is the other host location for the tournament.
Day two of the Oracle ITA Masters will resume on Friday morning. The tournament central page will feature updated draws and start times for day two on Thursday evening.
