Saturday's Top Storylines
1. Liberty (0-2) will seek the first victory of the Hugh Freeze era Saturday night when it plays host to a MAC opponent (1-1 Buffalo) at Williams Stadium for the first time in program history. 2. The only previous meeting between Liberty and Buffalo resulted in a 27-24 overtime triumph by the Flames on Oct. 24, 1998 at Williams Stadium. Both Liberty and Buffalo were FCS independent squads at the time. 3. Saturday's game will kick off a three-game homestand for the Flames. Liberty is 5-2 at Williams Stadium since joining the FBS in 2018. 4. Liberty senior QB Stephen Calvert appears on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Preseason Watch List. The fourth-year starter ranks No. 4 among active FBS QBs in passing yards (8,808) and passing TDs (program-record 66). 5. Senior WR Antonio Gandy-Golden, a Biletnikoff Award Watch List member, has been Calvert's most frequent target throughout his career. He recorded his 11th career 100-yard game during the season opener vs. Syracuse and ranks third among active FBS receivers with 173 career receptions. 6. The Flames' defense has come up with five takeaways during the first two games. Redshirt senior CB Bejour Wilson has recorded a pair of interceptions, giving him five picks for his two-year Liberty career.
A Liberty Win Would ... • Give the Flames a 2-0 all-time record against Buffalo and a 3-9 mark versus MAC opponents. • Mark the Flames' first victory over a MAC foe since a 27-23 triumph at Ball State on Sept. 11, 2010. • Improve the Flames' all-time record to 7-4 when hosting teams from New York, including 1-1 this season. • Avoid the Flames' first 0-3 start since opening the 2012 season (Turner Gill's first at Liberty) at 0-4. • Be Hugh Freeze's first victory as the Flames' head coach. • Avoid the team's first back-to-back losses in home games since Sept. 30 (Saint Francis (Pa.)) and Oct. 14 (Kennesaw State), 2017. • Mark the third time since the start of 2018 that the Flames have topped a bowl team from the previous season (also New Mexico State and Troy in 2017).
