Longwe-Smit will be joining the Flames in January.
The Liberty men's tennis team has announced the addition of Thando Longwe-Smit. Longwe-Smit will join the team starting in the spring 2020 semester in January.
"Our team is thrilled about the addition of Thando. We are impressed with Thando's character, work ethic and athleticism and know he will make a big impact on our culture," said Flames third-year head coach Derek Schwandt. "He has a big vision for his academic and tennis career, and he will make everyone around him better."
Longwe-Smit hails from Kensington, South Africa. He is the No. 1 U18 player in the South Africa Tennis Federation rankings. He represented his country at the U21 Africa Youth Games and won the doubles event there.
This year, Longwe-Smit won the ITF G5 in Potchefstroom, South Africa defeating Robbie Arends 6-3, 6-4 in the final. He finished runner-up in the ITF G3 in Pretoria and in the ITF G5 in Potchefstroom. He also won the ITF G3 doubles event in Pretoria with partner Alec Beckley.
Longwe-Smit will be joining a strong Flames freshmen class which also includes Goncalo Ferreira (Barcelos, Portugal), Rafael Marques Da Silva (São Paulo, Brazil), Deji Thomas-Smith (London, United Kingdom), and Joseph Emerson (Whittier, Calif.).
