Representing the USA Team, 2018 Liberty graduate Carson Waters posted a fourth-place finish in the men's pole vault final at the 30th World University Games, which concluded Saturday at San Paolo Stadium in Naples, Italy.

Waters successfully cleared 17-9 Friday evening to earn the best finish among the eight athletes with Liberty ties who competed in Naples this week. He continued a successful first post-collegiate season which previously featured a Liberty alumni record 18-5.5 clearance at the LSU Battle on the Bayou on April 6.

Fellow 2018 Liberty graduate Darrel Jones set a Liberty alumni record of his own on Monday with a personal-best 53-1.5 effort in the men's triple jump prelims. Jones went on to place 11th in Wednesday's final at 51-3.75.

Noel Palmer wrapped up her sophomore season by advancing to the women's 5K final, where she came in 14th with a 17:33.48 clocking.

Junior Tanner Ealum ran the second leg for the USA Team's women's 4 x 400 relay squad, which advanced to the final with a 3:36.12 effort. However, the USA did not compete in the final on Saturday.

Representing his native Chile, sophomore Jose Ballivian was the top current Flames performer in the field events. He heaved the shot put 56-7.5 for 18th place in the prelims, but failed to qualify for the final.

Liberty Associate Head Track & Field Coach Andrew "Pete" McFadden served as the USA Team's head coach in Naples. The USA Team came away with three medals, including two silvers (Andrew Liskowitz – men's shot put and Rachel Baxter – women's pole vault) and one bronze (Bridget Guy – women's pole vault).

The 2019 USATF Outdoor Championships will be contested July 25-28 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Waters has qualified for the meet in the men's pole vault, while Jones' 53-1.5 triple jump performance from Naples might punch his ticket to Iowa as well.

The meet will determine Team USA's representatives to the 2019 IAAF World Championships (Sept. 27-Oct. 6 in Doha, Qatar) and the 2019 Europe vs. USA Match (Sept. 9-10 in Minsk, Belarus).
