Liberty men's tennis rising junior Nicaise Muamba had the opportunity to take on one of the world's top singles players in Australia's Bernard Tomic at the ATP Tour's Winnipeg National Bank Challenger on Wednesday afternoon.

Muamba, a native of Laval, Quebec, Canada, squared off against world No. 96 Tomic at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. Tomic, who has a career-best world ranking of No. 17 (2016) and 40 Grand Slam victories to his credit, edged Muamba 6-4 in the first set.

Tomic, the top seed in the tournament, topped Muamba 6-2 in the second set for a two-set win (6-4, 6-2) to advance to the round of 16.

While Muamba's run in the singles main draw came to a close, he teamed up with fellow Canadian Gabriel Diallo to win a first round doubles match against the No. 2 seed, JP Fruttero of the United States and Ruben Gonzales of the Philippines. Fruttero has been ranked as high as No. 83 in the world in doubles, while Gonzalez has reached as high as No. 131 in the world.

After dropping the first set 6-3, Muamba and Diallo rallied to win the second set by a 6-3 score to force a third set 10-point tiebreaker.

The Canadian duo got past Fruttero and Gonzalez 11-9 in the tiebreaker to win the match in comeback fashion (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9)). Muamba and Diallo move on to face Hans Hach Verdugo (Mexico) and Dennis Novikov (United States) in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4 p.m. Muamba topped Hach Verdugo in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) in the singles round of 64, Tuesday.
