McFadden to Coach USA Team at World University Games

Liberty Associate Head Track & Field Coach Andrew "Pete" McFadden will serve as the USA Team's head track coach for the 30th World University Games, slated for July 3-14 in Naples, Italy. Track & field events will take place July 8-13 at San Paolo Stadium.

McFadden's coaching staff includes Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Delethea Quarles, currently serving as South Carolina's assistant head coach. The USA Team's 31-member track & field squad features 2019 Flames Jahquez Durham, Tanner Ealum, Chelsea Igberaese, Noel Palmer and Michael Todd as well as Liberty alumni Darrel Jones and Carson Waters. Jose Ballivian will also compete in Naples, representing his native Chile.

The Olympic Channel is planning to broadcast more than 100 hours of streaming coverage throughout the World University Games.

Contested every two years, the World University Games features college-aged athletes competing in a variety of sports. The 2017 edition in Chinese Taipei saw 145 different nations represented in 22 sports.

The World University Games are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Last summer, Liberty had a strong presence on the USA Team at the inaugural FISU America Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil. McFadden assisted Liberty Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Brant Tolsma in coaching the squad. Durham, Jones, Palmer, Todd and Waters were all part of the USA Team's 23-medal effort in the track & field events.

McFadden recently wrapped up his 13th season on the Liberty track & field coaching staff, primarily working with the sprints and relays. He guided Alejandro Perlaza Zapata to All-America honors in the indoor and outdoor men's 400 in 2019. McFadden also oversaw the record-breaking women's 4 x 400 relay team, which reached the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the first time.
