Tournament Reflections – Liberty's Last Showing at the ASUN Championship: • Liberty will be competing in its first-ever ASUN Men's Golf Championship. • Last May, 17 of Liberty's 20 NCAA Division I athletics programs moved their conference affiliation from the Big South Conference to the ASUN Conference. • Liberty was a member of the Big South Conference for 27 years, starting its membership during the 1991-92 athletic year. • After winning five of the last eight Big South titles (2011, 2012, 2014, 216 and 2018), the Flames will be looking for a different avenue to the NCAA Regionals during their first season of competition in the ASUN Conference. • The ASUN Men's Golf Championship has been contested at The Chateau Elan Golf Club - Legends Club 10 out of the last 11 years. • North Florida has won the ASUN Men's Golf Championship five times during the 11-year span, including last year's conference championship title. • North Florida posted a winning score of 4-under par 564 (285-279), finishing five shots clear of Lipscomb's 1-over par 569 (286-283) in a weather-shortened event in 2018.
From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty's Last Time Out: • The Flames (284-281) finished tied for third place with tournament host and No. 26 ranked NC State (291-274) at the Stitch Intercollegiate, last Friday and Saturday, with each team carding an 11-under par 565. • The event was shortened to 36 holes after moderate to steady rains hampered playing conditions on both Friday and Saturday. • No. 3 Wake Forest used the soft playing conditions to gain an edge, closing the event with an 11-under par 277 and a winning score of 14-under par 562 (285-277). • Jonathan Yaun paced Liberty during the event, finishing tied for fifth place with a 4-under par 140 (71-69). The freshman tied the low round of his rookie season on Saturday and posted the first top-five finish of his collegiate career. • Ervin Chang (70-71), who was ranked No. 28 in the country at the time of the event, and Kieran Vincent (71-70) shared 10th place with a 3-under par 141. • Vincent finished the tournament with a pair of sub-par rounds, giving him 14 rounds at par or better this season. • Chang posted his team-leading seventh top-10 finish and has now finished the last seven tournaments with an under-par total score. • Zach Bardin, who was competing as an individual, closed the event with a 3-under par 69, the first sub-70 round of the sophomore's collegiate career.
Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes: • For the fourth week in a row, Liberty is ranked No. 20 in the latest Golfstat national ranking, its second highest ranking in program history. • Following the runner-up finish at the Linger Longer Invitational (March 15-17), Liberty's national ranking climbed to an all-time program high of No. 18 on March 20. • The Flames have two individual golfers who currently rank inside the top-75 in the country: Ervin Chang (No. 30) and Gabe Lench (No. 55).
Scouting the Field (Eight teams): • The Flames will face their smallest field of the season when they challenge for the ASUN Men's Golf Championship, which features an eight-team field. • No. 15 North Florida and No. 20 Liberty are the only two top-50 ranked teams in the tournament field. • Liberty and North Florida faced each other during the first three events this spring, with the Ospreys besting the Flames in two of the three events (Sea Best Invitational and the General Hackler Championship). • Liberty's lone win over North Florida was at the SunTrust Gator Invitational. • Liberty finished the Florida-hosted tournament in third place with a 2-over par 842, while North Florida finished in fourth place with a 6-over par 846.
