Saturday's 4-3 victory over Lipscomb was the 100th of head coach Jeff Maren's Liberty career.

The Liberty Lady Flames topped the visiting Lipscomb Bisons 4-3 in their ASUN home opener, Saturday at the Cook Tennis Center.

Liberty has now won three straight matches, all coming in ASUN action, and improves to 10-6 on the year. The Lady Flames are 3-1 in conference play and take over sole possession of second place in the league with the win.

Liberty secured the victory by winning the doubles point and taking the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles bouts. The Lady Flames have now won their last seven home conference openers.

Lipscomb falls to 13-4 on the year and 2-1 in the ASUN. The Bisons see their six-match winning streak halted.

Thoughts From Head Coach Jeff Maren
"I was very proud of the grit we exhibited today. Lipscomb is a tough team, and we had to play well to get the win. I was especially proud of how well Maria played under pressure in her singles match. She pulled out a big win for the team today."

How It Happened

  • Liberty took an early 1-0 lead by winning the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles matches. Playing for the first time ever in a competitive match together, the Lady Flames' Alexandra Almborg and Kalani Soli topped the Bisons' Madeleine Brooks and Denise Buberl 6-3 on court two.
  • Soares and fellow senior Maria Medina also delivered a 6-3 victory on court one over Vika Dzyuba and Kate Popova. The Liberty pair's victory snapped the Lipscomb duo's 10-match winning streak and extending Soares and Medina's own winning streak to seven matches.
  • Senior Anna Dollar continued her run of success, winning her ninth straight match. Dollar cruised in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 over Thabile Tshatedi. Her victory made it 2-0 Lady Flames.
  • Shortly after Dollar's win, Soli followed suit by defeating Kate Popova of the Bisons in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). The Liberty junior's victory, which extended the lead to 3-0, was her eighth straight.
  • Lipscomb's Dzyuba bested Liberty senior Ashley Bongart in two sets (6-0, 6-2) for the visitors' first point of the day. Her teammate, Brooks, took down Soares in straight sets (6-4, 6-0). Brooks trailed 4-3 in the first set before winning nine straight games to claim the match and cut the Liberty lead to one at 3-2.
  • The Lady Flames' Maria Medina and her counterpart, Liza Diachenko, were locked in a 5-5 tie in the first set in the No. 4 singles match. Medina prevailed 7-5, built a 5-0 set two lead and held on for a 7-5, 6-2 triumph. Her team-best 19th victory of the 2018-19 campaign brought the score to 4-2 Liberty and clinched the match.
  • Buberl (Lipscomb) won by retirement against Almborg on court five. Buberl's victory settled the final score at 4-3.
  • Liberty is 2-0 in the all-time series with Lipscomb. The Lady Flames also defeated the Bisons on the road in 2013.
  • The Lady Flames have won seven of their last eight matches overall, dating back to March 3.
  • Liberty is 2-0 at home this year after emerging victorious in its first home match since Feb. 2. The only other match the Lady Flames played in Lynchburg was a 7-0 victory over Navy, Feb. 2 at Crosswhite Athletic Club.
  • Maren holds a 100-62 career record at Liberty and is 45-11 all-time in conference matches (42-10 Big South, 3-1 ASUN) in his seven years with the Lady Flames.

Next Up

  • Liberty will host the Stetson Hatters (10-6, 1-2 ASUN) on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Cook Tennis Center.
