Chelsea Igberaese won Section B of the Texas Relays women's discus competition with a school-record 179-6 heave.
Liberty sophomore Chelsea Igberaese's school record-setting 179-6 effort won Section B of the women's discus on Saturday, the final day of the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays before a crowd of 20,957 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Competing at the same venue where her coach, Clendon Henderson, set two still-standing Liberty records (men's shot put and discus) 11 years ago, Igberaese unleashed her 179-6 bomb during round three. The 12.5-foot personal best catapulted her from potentially missing out on the finals to winning the event.
Igberaese added 11 feet to the previous school record of 168-7, set by Patria Vaimaona while winning the 2018 Big South title at High Point. All four Liberty women's outdoor throwing records have now been broken within the last 12 months, including two (shot put and discus) in the last nine days.
Igberaese not only punched her NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round ticket for the second straight year but also stamped herself as a contender to return to Austin for the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June. Only 10 NCAA Division I women's discus throwers had reached longer than 179-6 this season, entering the weekend.
About 6.5 hours later, the Lady Flames' 4 x 400 relay quartet of Tanner Ealum, Ty'Asia Dansbury, Delaney McDowell and Tanner Ealum closed out Liberty's stay in Texas with a fifth-place finish in the final. Their season-best time of 3:38.67, aided by Dansbury's sparkling 52.8-second carry on leg two, ranks them as the No. 2 relay grouping in program history.
In between, two-time reigning ASUN Women's Field Athlete of the Week Naomi Mojica produced an eighth-place finish in Section A of the women's shot put with a top mark of 50-3.5.
