Liberty women's lacrosse senior captain Brianna McCaffrey has been selected as the ASUN Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, Tuesday afternoon.

McCaffrey becomes the first two-time ASUN Defensive Player of the Week in the conference this season and is also the first three-time ASUN weekly honors recipient. She was previously named the defensive player of the week on Feb. 19 and the player of the week, Feb. 26.

McCaffrey, a midfielder, had an outstanding defensive game in Liberty's 16-12 ASUN-opening win at Kennesaw State on Saturday. The Boca Raton, Fla., native scooped up six ground balls and generated five caused turnovers. The Lady Flames notched a season high in caused turnovers (24) and collected 28 ground balls (second most this year) in the contest.

"Bri is a phenomenal athlete. We've known that since we first started recruiting her, but to see how far she's grown, improved and implemented things she's learned is really special," said Liberty Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle. "She is a special player. You can't watch one of our games without noticing her in so many aspects of the game. We are lucky to have her on our team and can't wait to continue to watch her story unfold."

McCaffrey is first on the team in caused turnovers with 32 and ranks second in the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.56) for a Lady Flames squad which leads the nation in caused turnovers per game (17.11). She has 123 career caused turnovers, which is the most among any active DI player. McCaffrey is also No. 39 in the country and second on the team in ground balls per game (3.00).

In addition to her defensive efforts, McCaffrey added three goals and four draw controls in the victory over the Owls. McCaffrey's second goal of the day was highlight-reel material, a low-to-high backhand flip shot just under the crossbar, and pushed Liberty's lead to 14-9 with 14:28 left.

Liberty has now claimed seven of the 12 ASUN weekly awards handed out through the first six weeks of the season, including four defensive player of the week honors and three offensive player of the week honors.

McCaffrey and the Lady Flames, who are a program-best 7-2 through nine games, will be back in action at home this weekend. Liberty will take on the Old Dominion Monarchs (3-8), Friday at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Lady Flames will take on the Stetson Hatters (0-6) in their first-ever ASUN home contest at noon at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
