Follow along as Liberty junior Casey Goodwin chronicles her tryout for Team USA, Friday through Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Saturday, March 2 - ASUN Connections "Today we got an early start with a 7:30 a.m. practice, then we trained again at 2 p.m. It was just like the practice before with a lot of intense 6 on 6 drills. It's crazy how fast things fly by. I feel like I just got here, and I have to leave tomorrow.
This weekend I have played alongside of a few former club teammates. It is so good to catch up with them. I have also seen a few other familiar faces from the ASUN Conference including Gabby O'Connell from North Florida and Lauren Chastang from Kennesaw State.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to play with such great girls at such a high level. I have learned so much and I have made so many new connections. It's awesome to hear about the cultures on other collegiate teams and even talk to a few about their faith.
I am not quite ready to leave, but I am so excited to get back in the gym with my Lady Flames. One more practice left until I fly home!" Previous Posts: Thursday, Feb. 28 - Arrival in Colorado "After traveling for most of the day, Coach Johnson and I arrived in Colorado around 4 p.m. We walked outside into the cold air to a breath-taking view of the Rocky Mountains. We then boarded the shuttle that took us to the Olympic Training Center. As we were making small talk with other players on the bus, Karch Kiraly walked up to the bus and ended up sitting in the seat right in front of us. What a legend.
We soon arrived at our destination and ate dinner. A few girls from Texas Tech and I went to explore for a bit, and I am now in the dorm doing some homework with them. I have already met some very nice people who have a lot of the same dreams and goals as I do.
I am excited to begin playing tomorrow (Friday). I will check back in after the first session!" Friday, March 1 - Tryouts Begin "Today started off pretty relaxed. I woke up and went to breakfast with a few girls from Wake Forest. One of them is one of my best friends from club ball. After breakfast we went to check in, which is just paperwork and t-shirts. My t-shirt color is light blue, and my number is 71. Coach Johnson mentioned how ironic it was that Liberty was founded in 1971.
I then went back to the dorm to wait for the first session to begin. There was a bit of anxiety and a whole lot of praying.
It then came time to go to the first session of the day. We started off with serve and pass before jumping right into competition. It was a very fast-paced and intense environment. There are so many great players here! I am exhausted and excited for another shot tomorrow. We are now waiting for our new wave assignments for the morning session.
Side note: It's supposed to snow tomorrow. Also, I cannot get over how pretty the mountains are here!
