Muamba Named ASUN Player of the Week

Liberty sophomore Nicaise Muamba has been selected as the ASUN Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Muamba was recognized by the league on Wednesday afternoon and is Liberty's first-ever ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Week.

"To borrow men's basketball's motto, what you do every day is more important than what you do once in a while," said Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt. "Nicaise is setting a great example for our team with his work ethic, passion for the game and focus on a daily basis at practice."

Muamba opened the spring 2019 campaign with an impressive day at Miami (Fla.), last Friday. The Laval, Quebec, Canada native, who came into the match unranked, defeated the Hurricanes' Adria Soriano Barrera in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) in the No. 1 singles match. Soriano Barrera entered the match as the No. 21-ranked singles player in the nation.

Muamba never trailed in the match on the way to his first career ranked win. Soriano Barrera had previously knocked off the No. 4, No. 17, No. 23 and No. 57 players in the country.

Earlier in the match, Muamba teamed up with his doubles partner, junior Chase Burton, for a 6-4 victory over Soriano Barrera and Dane Dunlap on court one.

Muamba is the first Flames conference player of the week since Eddie Gutierrez was honored as Big South Player of the Week on Feb. 14, 2018. Muamba leads all Liberty players in singles victories with 11 on the year and is 7-4 overall in doubles.

Muamba and the Flames (0-1) are back in action this weekend with a trio of matches. Liberty will first take on Drexel (0-3) Friday morning at 9 a.m. at Penn's Heicht Tennis Center, followed by a 4:30 p.m. contest against the Penn Quakers (1-1). The Flames will cap off the weekend with a match at Princeton (0-0), Sunday at 10 a.m.
