ASUN Preseason Poll
The Flames men's tennis team has been selected to finish third in its inaugural season in the ASUN.
Liberty garnered one first-place vote and 47 points in the 2019 ASUN Conference Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Friday. Defending ASUN champion North Florida was picked to finish first in the conference with seven first-place votes and 63 points. Florida Gulf Coast (52 points) has been voted to finish second in the league.
The Flames' first-ever ASUN match will be on March 23 at Kennesaw State. Their conference home opener will be contested on March 30 against Lipscomb. The 2019 ASUN Men's Tennis Championship will be played at Stetson in DeLand, Fla., April 18-20.
Stetson (fourth place, 43 points), Lipscomb (fifth place, 34 points), Kennesaw State (sixth place, 25 points), NJIT (seventh place, 16 points) and North Alabama (eighth place, eight points) round out the poll.
In 2018, Liberty finished 12-12 overall and 4-3 in league play in its final year in the Big South Conference. The Flames' eight-man spring 2019 roster features one senior (Eddie Gutierrez), two juniors (Chase Burton and Vince Salas), one sophomore (Nicaise Muamba) and four freshmen (William Barker, Steve Mundt, Ian Sturgill and Josh Wilson).
The Flames will open their 2019 slate at Miami (Fla.) (15-13, 4-8 ACC in 2018) on Friday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla. The Hurricanes were the 42nd-ranked team in the country at season's end in 2018. Liberty will face the George Washington Colonials (6-18, 4-2 A10 in 2018) in its home opener on Feb. 15 in Lynchburg.
