The 2018 calendar year brought many new opportunities and success for Liberty Flames Athletics.
Liberty Athletics officially joined the ASUN Conference on July 1 after spending the previous 27 years as a member of the Big South Conference. Additionally, the Liberty football program played its inaugural season as an FBS program this fall.
Liberty Athletics captured seven conference titles in 2018, including: men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, women's basketball, softball and men's golf.
Over the course of the next two weeks, LibertyFlames.com will showcase the Top 10 Moments of 2018 in Flames Athletics.
The series continues on Wednesday with the No. 4 moment, the Lady Flames women's basketball team capturing the 2018 Big South Women's Basketball Championship title on March 11. The top-seeded Lady Flames defeated the third-seeded UNC Asheville Bulldogs 60-42 at the Vines Center for their 17th Big South Championship title. Liberty swept the 2017-18 Big South regular season and tournament titles and finished its run in the Big South with 16 regular-season titles, 17 tournament titles and 17 NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Lady Flames won an unprecedented 10 straight Big South tournament titles between 1996-97 and 2005-06. Liberty finished 328-88 in Big South Conference games and 56-10 in Big South Tournament games during its time in the conference.
