Game Day Central: Norfolk State
Liberty (5-6) will wrap up its inaugural FBS season by hosting Norfolk State (4-6, 2-5 MEAC) on Saturday in a contest originally scheduled for Sept. 15 but postponed by Hurricane Florence.
"4 Downs" with the Spartans
1. Liberty has faced Norfolk State more often than any other opponent on the Flames' 2018 schedule. The Flames are 4-2 against the Spartans in a series that dates back to 1997. Saturday's game is Norfolk State's first meeting with an FBS foe since a 45-7 loss at Marshall on Sept. 19, 2015. Liberty is 1-0 versus FCS opponents this season, thanks to a 48-41 home win over Idaho State on Oct. 20.
2. The last time Norfolk State visited Williams Stadium, the Spartans defeated Liberty 31-24 in Turner Gill's second game as the Flames' head coach (Sept. 8, 2012). Gill is 1-1 when facing Norfolk State during his head coaching career, also including a 17-0 shutout win in Norfolk on Sept. 6, 2014. Liberty is playing host to a second team from Norfolk this season, after opening the year with a 52-10 home victory over Old Dominion on Sept. 1.
3. Liberty and Norfolk State were originally slated to meet during week three (Sept. 15), before the projected path of Hurricane Florence forced the contest's postponement. The Spartans are coming off of their third bye week of the season. Liberty is facing its third Commonwealth opponent in a season for the first time since 2014.
4. Fourth-year Norfolk State Head Coach Latrell Scott will be facing Liberty with a fourth different team. He played two games against the Flames during his playing career at Hampton (1997-98). Scott also met the Flames as an assistant coach at Western Carolina (2001) and VMI (2002-04). Scott is 4-2 all-time against the Flames, although Liberty has won the last two meetings.
