Kirwa Voted ASUN Men's XC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Thirteen days after winning ASUN Conference men's cross country's most prestigious athletic honor (Runner of the Year), Liberty senior Azaria Kirwa has earned the conference's top academic recognition (Scholar-Athlete of the Year).

Kirwa, a senior nursing major with a 3.38 cumulative GPA, was voted ASUN Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's sports information directors and academic advisors.

Also a member of the ASUN Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team, Kirwa has won four of his five races this season, including the Virginia Tech Invitational, Iona College Meet of Champions, Queen City Invite and ASUN Championship.

The native of Eldoret, Kenya has earned a significant amount of awards this fall, highlighted by USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors on Sept. 17. He also collected four ASUN Men's Runner of the Week certificates (Sept. 5, Sept. 19, Oct. 3 and Oct. 17).

Kirwa and his teammates will now head to Rock Hill, S.C., for the 2018 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships on Friday. The meet, which will determine the qualifiers to the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, begins with the women's 6K at 11 a.m. The men's 10K follows at noon.

Kirwa will attempt to return to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships for the second straight year. In 2017, he finished 25th at the meet to earn All-America honors.
