The 18th-ranked Lady Flames field hockey team shut out host Providence 4-0, Friday evening at Lennon Family Field in its BIG EAST Conference and regular season finale.

With the victory, Liberty (12-5, 6-1 BIG EAST) has clinched the No. 2 seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The victory gives the Lady Flames their sixth BIG EAST regular season triumph, a new program record. Providence (11-7) sees its conference record fall to 4-3, and the Friars will be the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Liberty senior Agueda Moroni scored twice in the contest, her 24th and 25th goals of the season, and has now matched the program record for career goals with 54. Lady Flames freshmen Alivia Klopp and Charlotte Vaanhold scored as well for the visitors, while junior goalkeeper Allison Schaefer notched her third clean sheet of the season.

Turning Point
Liberty generated quality chances with six shots on goal during the first 21 minutes before finally breaking through at the 23:54. Senior Moniek van Aarle sent a centering pass from the right side to Klopp, who one-timed a shot info the cage for a 1-0 Lady Flames lead.

Late in the first half, Moroni scored on a rebound off a Kemy Meidane shot in the 33rd minute, providing Liberty a 2-0 cushion.

Key Stats & Notes

  • Liberty outshot Providence 23-4 in the contest. The Lady Flames tallied 20 shots on goal, which tied their season high. Nine different Liberty players recorded a shot on goal.
  • With 54 goals, Moroni has tied the program record for career goals (54), shared with former Lady Flame Natalie Barr (2012-15). Moroni has accomplished the feat in only three seasons at Liberty.  
  • Liberty improves to a perfect 5-0 in the all-time series with Providence. The Lady Flames have kept the Friars off the scoreboard in three of those five games.
  • Schaefer recorded the eighth shutout of her career. The Millersville, Pa., native is one shutout from tying the program career record of nine shutouts, held by Mallory Cuccio (2012-15) and Ann Jefferis (2011-13).
  • The Lady Flames drew seven short corners in the match, compared to just one for the Friars.
  • Seventeen Liberty players saw action in the contest.
  • With 12 wins, the Lady Flames have matched their win total from the 2015 season, the last time they won 12 or more contests.

 

Up Next
Liberty will host the 2018 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, starting next Friday at the Liberty Field Hockey Field. A pair of semifinal games will take place on Friday, followed by the title game on Sunday, Nov. 4.  A seeding release for the tournament will be sent out tomorrow (Saturday).
