No. 35 Liberty Set to Close out Fall at Grandover Collegiate

No. 35 Liberty will close out its four-event fall schedule this weekend at the 2018 Grandover Collegiate, starting Saturday morning.

The tournament is hosted by UNCG at the Grandover Resort – East Course (par 72, 7,245 yards) in Greensboro, N.C. The 13-team field will play 36 holes of continuous play on Saturday, followed by a final 18 holes of play on Sunday.

Tournament Reflections – Liberty's Previous Showing at the Grandover Collegiate:  
• Liberty has only played in this event one other time, finishing the event in third place with a 25-under par 839 (279-280-280) on Oct. 30-31, 2016.
• The 25-under par 839 ranks as the third best 54-hole team total in program history and was just two shots from matching Liberty's 54-hole team program record.
• The 2016 event was hosted on the West Course at the Grandover Resort, as work was being done on the greens of the East Course.
• The Grandover Resort holds a place of significance in Liberty's program history. The Flames captured the 2012 NCAA Greensboro Regional title on the East Course of the Grandover Resort.
• The win propelled Liberty into the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship where the Flames finished in 10th place, marking the highest team finish at the national championship in program history.

From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty's Last Time Out
• The Flames posted a three-stroke victory at the Intercollegiate at The Grove, Oct. 7-9, an event hosted by Middle Tennessee at The Grove Club in College Grove, Tenn.
• Liberty fired a 15-under par 849 (290-277-282), finishing three strokes ahead of South Florida's 12-under par 852 (284-280-288) and four ahead of Purdue's 11-under par 853 (294-274-285).
• The win marked Liberty's 29th all-time NCAA Division I team title and the Flames 19th under head coach Jeff Thomas.
• The Flames Gabe Lench (72-66-70) and Alexandre Fuchs (70-66-72) shared medalist honors, carding an 8-under par 208.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes
• Liberty enters this weekend's event No. 35 in the latest Golfstat team national rankings.
• The Flames enter the weekend's event with a 288.78 team stroke average, which ranks ahead of the second-best fall average in program history (290.75 in 2010/school record is a 283.07 set in 2016).
• After winning five of the last eight Big South titles (2011, 2012, 2014, 216 and 2018), the Flames will be looking for a different avenue to the NCAA Regionals during their first season of competition in the ASUN Conference.
• During the offseason, 17 of Liberty's 20 NCAA Division I athletics programs moved their conference affiliation from the Big South Conference to the ASUN Conference. Liberty was a member of the Big South Conference for 27 years, starting its membership during the 1991-92 athletic year.
