No. 18 Lady Flames, Friars to Meet in Providence, Friday, for Regular Season Finale

The Lady Flames field hockey team will wrap up its 2018 regular season schedule with a trip to Providence, R.I., for its BIG EAST Conference and regular season finale. No. 18 Liberty will face the Providence Friars, Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Lennon Family Field.

Both Liberty (11-5, 5-1 BIG EAST) and Providence (11-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) have earned spots in the 2018 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, which will be held at Liberty on Nov. 2 and 4. The winner of Friday evening's contest will receive the No. 2 seed for the tournament.

Liberty is coming off a 2-1 Senior Day win over No. 11 Boston College, this past Sunday. Providence is currently on a four-match winning streak, with its last victory (2-1 score) coming in a shootout at Georgetown, last Friday.

Series History
Liberty is 4-0 in the all-time series with Providence. The Lady Flames and Friars last met on Oct. 20, 2017, in Lynchburg, a 3-0 triumph for Liberty. In that contest, Agueda Moroni scored twice, and goalkeeper Allison Schaefer notched her third shutout of the year. The victory allowed the Lady Flames to clinch a spot in the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • Lady Flames senior Agueda Moroni is No. 1 in the nation in goals (23), goals per game (1.44) and points per game (3.50). Moroni and junior Mallory Fortenbaugh are tied for 12th in the country in assists per game at 0.63.
  • Liberty remains at No. 19 in the NCAA Field Hockey RPI. Providence is No. 31 in the RPI.
  • A win would give the Lady Flames six BIG EAST wins for the first time in program history. They posted 5-2 regular season marks in conference play in both 2016 and 2017.
  • As a team, Liberty is in the top 10 in the nation in four categories: goals per game (No. 7, 3.44), scoring average (No. 7, 3.40), assists per game (No. 8, 2.94) and points per game (No. 9, 9.81).
  • The Lady Flames have already punched a ticket to the 2018 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, Nov. 2 and 4 in Lynchburg. Liberty has qualified for the tournament in each of its first three seasons as an affiliate member of the league.
  • Twelve different Liberty players have scored at least one goal this season. Here are the leaders by class: senior Moroni (23), junior Fortenbaugh (3), sophomore Jill Bolton (10) and freshman Alivia Klopp (5).
  • Liberty's penalty corner defense has been outstanding throughout the 2018 season. The Lady Flames have surrendered only seven goals on 94 short corner attempts from their opponents.  
  • Liberty has four wins over ranked foes this season: No. 17 James Madison (Aug. 24), No. 7 Virginia (Sept. 16), No. 22 Old Dominion (Oct. 5) and No. 11 Boston College (Oct. 21).
