Gutierrez will play in tomorrow's round of 16 in the singles main draw.
Day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center saw Nicaise Muamba and Eddie Gutierrez of the Flames men's tennis team each win a pair of matches to reach the round of 16 in the singles main draw.
Overall, Liberty won seven total matches on the third day of play, all in singles.
"We fought well in some tough conditions today. Eddie and Nicaise have great opportunities tomorrow," said Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt.
Muamba started his day with a two-set victory over Richmond's George Lovitt, 6-1, 7-6 (3). The Liberty sophomore, who hails from Laval, Quebec, Canada, went on to defeat George Washingon's Jakub Behun in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) on Saturday afternoon. Muamba will squad off with No. 4 seed Gianni Ross of Virginia, Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, Gutierrez won his first match of the day by default to move on to the round of 32. In his next match, he bested Gabriel Nemeth of Penn State (6-2, 7-6 (5)). The Mexico City, Mexico, native will face No. 3 seed Aziz Kijametovic of Old Dominion. Both Gutierrez and Kijametovic are seniors on their respective squads.
Other Flames to win matches on Saturday included junior Chase Burton and freshmen Ian Sturgill and Farid Juri. Burton topped Brendan Volk of William & Mary 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the round of 32, where he met the No. 1 overall seed, Mitch Harper of Virginia Tech. Harper upended Burton in two sets (6-1, 6-2).
Like Burton, Sturgill began the morning with 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Richmond's Joe Nardini. However, Sturgill's run in the main draw came to a close in the round of 32 to Virginia's Matthew Lord in three sets (6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-3).
After losing his first round match yesterday, Liberty freshman Farid Juri bounced back with a victory against Dennis Afanasev of George Washington (6-4, 6-2).
