"We are excited to tip off our inaugural season in the ASUN Conference and appreciate Commissioner Ted Gumbart joining us for a celebration with our basketball coaches, staff, student-athletes and Flames Club members," said Director of Athletics Ian McCaw.
Throughout the banquet, fans will hear from both men's head coach, Ritchie McKay, and women's head coach, Carey Green. As the Flames enter a new era of basketball joining the ASUN Conference, commissioner of the conference, Ted Gumbart, will also be in attendance.
Both teams are officially in the swing of practice as the Lady Flames are coming off a Big South Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance while the men's program is coming off a Big South Championship title game appearance for the first time since 2013.
This will be the first opportunity for fans to get a chance to meet the new faces on the men's basketball team, which include first-year Liberty assistant coaches, Kevin Anderson and Derek Johnston. On the court, the Flames return four of five starters from a squad that won 22 games last season.
"We are so grateful and blessed for the support the Flames Club provides our program and I cannot think of a better to way to start the new season than with our fans," McKay said. "We cannot thank ASUN Commissioner Ted Gumbart enough for joining us for such a special event. This will give our fans a chance to interact with our terrific young men who represent this university so well."
The women's team is coming off a 24-win season, highlighted by a sweep of the Big South regular season and tournament titles. The Lady Flames' returnees include 2018 Big South Tournament MVP KK Barbour and the reigning Big South Freshman of the Year, Ashtyn Baker.
"We look forward to sharing our gratitude for all of the prayers, personal support and the financial assistance committed by the Flames Club. We consider the Flames Club family and always want to express our appreciation toward building Champions for Christ," Green said. "Our program is excited to enter into the challenges of a new conference. The ASUN is recognized as a progressive and respectfully well-balanced conference. I am excited to introduce this year's explosive and talented young team. They have really been working hard to develop the chemistry for the challenges in the ASUN."
