Flames Set for the Intercollegiate at the Grove Event

The third stop on Liberty's four-event fall schedule has the Flames returning to the 2018 Intercollegiate at The Grove tournament.

The three-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Middle Tennessee at The Grove Club (par 72, 7,368 yards), starting on Sunday and wrapping up play on Tuesday.

Now on The Tee – Liberty's Starting Five (Season Stroke Average)
• Zach Barbin (72.33)
• Gabe Lench (72.83)
• Kieran Vincent (73.33)
• Jonathan Yaun (74.83)
• Alexandre Fuchs (75.83)

Tournament Reflections – Liberty's Previous Showing at the Intercollegiate at the Grove:
• The Flames made their first-ever appearance at this event last year, finishing in fifth place with a 17-over par 881 (302-288-291).
• After opening the event with a 14-over par 302, Liberty rebounded to play the final 36 hole of play at a combined 3-over par.
• The Flames finished seven shots behind tournament host Middle Tennessee and six shots ahead of sixth-place South Florida.
• Graduated senior Mickey DeMorat made a run at his first-ever collegiate medalist honors, finishing the event one shot off the lead and in second place with a 6-under par 210 (73-69-68).
• Alexandre Fuchs is Liberty's top returning golfer from the Flames' starting five at this event last year, as the junior finished tied for 17th place with a 4-over par 220 (75-78-67).
• Fuchs closed the event with the best round in the 68-man field, finishing the tournament with a 5-under par 67, his low round of the season.

From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty's Last Time Out
• Despite tying for the best final round of the 2018 Shoal Creek Invitational, the Flames were unable to make a move up the leaderboard and finished the event in eighth place, held Sept. 24-25 in Birmingham, Ala.
• The Flames closed the UAB-hosted tournament with a 3-over par 291. The final round score matched the last round fired by tournament champion Texas A&M during the team's final trip around the Shoal Creek Country Club (par 72, 7,300 yards).
• Liberty finished the two-day event with a 15-over 879 (298-290-291), closing out the Flames' second event of their four-tournament fall schedule.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes
• After winning five of the last eight Big South titles (2011, 2012, 2014, 216 and 2018), the Flames will be looking for a different avenue to the NCAA Regionals during their first season of competition in the ASUN Conference.
• During the offseason, 17 of Liberty's 20 NCAA Division I athletics programs moved their conference affiliation from the Big South Conference to the ASUN Conference. Liberty was a member of the Big South Conference for 27 years, starting its membership during the 1991-92 athletic year.
• The men's golf team is looking to replace two of the most successful players in program history who graduated last year. Mickey DeMorat finished his career with the second-best scoring average in program history (72.28) and posted 13 career top-10 finishes. Isaiah Logue ranked just behind him in third place in school history in career stroke average (72.52), while posting 18 career top-10 finishes.
• The Flames will play the Intercollegiate at The Grove without the services of junior Ervin Chang, who led the Flames in 2017-18 with six top-10 finishes and a 72.15 stroke average.
• Chang is participating in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Oct. 4-7, 2018, in Singapore, China. The winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship receives an invitational to the 2019 Masters.
