Game Day Central: New Mexico State
Liberty (2-2) makes its second straight trip to the Land of Enchantment on Saturday, facing fellow FBS independent squad New Mexico State (1-4) for the first time in program history.
"4 Downs" with the Aggies
1. Saturday's contest will be Liberty's first-ever matchup with New Mexico State on the gridiron. It is also the Flames' first meeting with the Aggies in a men's team sport. Liberty lost to New Mexico State in volleyball in 2003 and fell to the Aggies on the softball diamond in 2005. Liberty's women's swimming & diving squad is competing at New Mexico State for the first time, Friday and Saturday.
2. Liberty is playing the second of two consecutive games in New Mexico, as the Flames posted a 52-43 victory at New Mexico last Saturday. Both games are seeing Liberty's opponent playing its Homecoming game on the heels of a bye week. The Flames will face New Mexico State twice this season, as the Aggies will travel to Williams Stadium on Nov. 24. Liberty has never played the same opponent twice in a single season.
3. New Mexico State topped Utah State 26-20 in last season's Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl, remaining unbeaten (3-0-1) all-time in bowl games. However, the Aggies are still seeking their first home win of the 2018 season, with Saturday marking their third home game of the year.
4. Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill and New Mexico State Head Coach Doug Martin squared off four times as head coaching foes in the MAC. Gill's Buffalo Bulls were 3-1 against Martin's Kent State Golden Flashes between 2006-09. The Flames' passing game could be challenged by a New Mexico State defense which has held four of five opponents below 200 passing yards and totaled 14 sacks.
