Despite being off from competition last weekend, the Liberty men's cross country team moved up to No. 4 in the Southeast Region on Monday, matching its best-ever U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional ranking.
Liberty trails only Virginia (No. 1), NC State (No. 2) and Furman (No. 3) in this week's regional listing. The only previous Flames squad to earn a No. 4 regional ranking was the 2008 team, led by the trio of Sam Chelanga, Jordan McDougal and Josh Edmonds.
Senior Azaria Kirwa, redshirt freshman Felix Kandie and sophomore Augostine Lisoreng are pacing the 2018 Flames. Kirwa has won both of his races (Virginia Tech Invitational and Iona College Meet of Champions) to start the season. Meanwhile, Kandie and Lisoreng have each posted a pair of top-10 finishes thus far.
Liberty will return to action Friday at the Queen City Invite at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, N.C. The women's 5K is set to begin at 5 p.m., followed by the men's 8K at 5:30.
