Game Day Central: North Texas
Liberty (1-1) plays host to unbeaten North Texas (3-0) on Saturday for the Flames' second home game against a Conference USA opponent this season.
"4 Downs" with the Mean Green
1. Saturday's game is not only the first-ever Liberty-North Texas gridiron matchup, but it marks the first time the Flames have ever faced the Mean Green in any men's sport. Liberty's previous matchups with North Texas came in softball, women's tennis and women's swimming & diving. Turner Gill's first coaching job (graduate assistant) came with the North Texas football team in 1989.
2. Liberty is playing its second straight home game against a Conference USA opponent. Prior to this season, the Flames had never matched up against a Conference USA foe. North Texas joins Texas State (Sept. 15, 1990) as the only two teams from Texas ever to play at Williams Stadium. Liberty's Stephen Calvert and North Texas' Mason Fine are two of seven returning FBS quarterbacks who posted 250 completions, 3,000 yards and 25 TDs in 2017.
3. Seth Littrell is in his third season as North Texas' head coach. He was an assistant at North Carolina when the No. 23/23 Tar Heels defeated Liberty 56-29 in the 2014 season opener. The third quarter has been a good one for both Liberty (24-7 scoring advantage) and North Texas (33-10 scoring advantage) thus far in 2018.
4. North Texas is the fourth opponent ever to travel more than 1,000 miles to play at Williams Stadium. The Mean Green are the first of three teams who will do so in 2018, along with Idaho State and New Mexico State. Four Flames hail from within 45 minutes of North Texas, including Solomon Ajayi (Frisco), Jerome Jackson (Fort Worth), Cooper McCaw (Southlake) and Lionell McConnell (Allen).
