Liberty wrapped up its first tournament of the fall, finishing in sixth place on Sunday at the 2018 Rod Myers Invitational.
The Flames wrapped up play as their season-opening event with a 7-over par 871 (289-290-292) on the Duke University Golf Course. Liberty entered the final round of the Duke-hosted event in fifth place, but a strong final day of play allowed Cincinnati to leapfrog the Flames on the score and crack the top five in the 13-team event.
Liberty will return to the golf course on Sept. 24 and 25 when the Flames travel to Birmingham, Ala., to participate in the Shoal Creek Invitational. The 54-hole event is hosted by UAB at the Shoal Creek Country Club.

Field Reflections: • Overnight leader Penn State withstood a final-day charge from host Duke to win the tournament by two strokes with a 12-under 852 (278-287-287). • The Blue Devils used their local knowledge of their home course to close with an 8-under par 280 and finished tied for second place with an overall 10-under par 854 (288-286-280). • North Carolina (280-286-288) shared second place with Duke, while Florida State rounded out the under-par team scores with a 4-under par 860 (287-288-285) to secure a fourth place finish. • Cincinnati was the final team to finish ahead of the Flames, carding a 2-over par 866 (294-286-286), five shots ahead of Liberty.
Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes: • After leading the Flames in scoring average during the 2017-18 season, junior Ervin Chang finishes as Liberty's scoring leader with a tie for 12th place. • Kieran Vincent, who sat out the 2017-18 season due to an injury, closed the event with a 1-under par 71, his first under-par round since a final round 2-under par 69 to close out the NCAA Austin Regional on May 17, 2017. • The Flames finished the event second in the field in par-3 scoring, playing the par-3 holes at 3-over par with a 3.05 scoring average. • Senior Gabe Lench individually finished tied for second with 14 birdies during the two-day tournament. • The Rod Myers Invitational has appeared on the fall portion of Liberty's schedule each of the last five seasons. • The Flames posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in 2012 (301-286-285-872/+8) and 2013 (294-282-293-869/+5) to highlight its showing at this event.
