A pair of consistent rounds on Saturday has Liberty in fifth place following the first day of competition at the 2018 Rod Myers Invitational.
Liberty stands in fifth place after firing a 3-over par 579 (289-290) on the Duke University Golf Course (par 72, 7,154 yards).
The tournament, the first of four events on Liberty's fall schedule, wraps up with tomorrow's final 18 holes of play. Liberty will tee off starting at 8:30 a.m., along with golfers from Florida State, who is in fourth place (1-under par 575), and sixth-place Cincinnati (4-over par 580).
Round Recap – Liberty's Starting Five: • Ervin Chang: T4, 4-under par 140 (68-72) • Gabe Lench: T33, 4-over par 148 (73-75) • Alexandre Fuchs: T33, 4-over par 148 (75-73) • Jonathan Yuan: T39, 5-over par 149 (79-70) • Kieran Vincent: T51, 7-over par 151 (73-78)
Field Reflections: • Penn State (11-under par 565/278-287) and North Carolina (10-under par 566/280-286) distanced themselves from the rest of the 13-team field during the first 36 holes of play. • Tournament host Duke (2-under par 574/288-286) and Florida State (1-under par 575/287-288) are the other two teams with under par scores heading into tomorrow's final round. • A total of 17 players in the 75-man field posted under-par scores on Saturday. • Florida State's John Pak holds the clubhouse lead with a 13-under par 131 (62-69), aided by a tournament record 10-under par 62 during the first round.
Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes: • After leading the Flames in scoring average during the 2017-18 season, junior Ervin Chang opened the season with a 4-under par 68 during the morning flight. • Playing in his first tournament as a Flame, freshman Jonathan Yaun rebounded from an opening round 7-over par 79 to card his first collegiate under-par score with a two-under par 70 during his second trip around the Duke University Golf Course. • Liberty finished the day tied with Duke, North Carolina and UNCG for the best scoring average on the day on the par-3 holes (3.00). • The Flames played the par-5 holes at a combined 10-under par, ranking fifth in the field in par-5 scoring. • Gabe Lench played the par-3 holes at a combined 2-under par to rank tied for fourth individually on the day, while Ervin Chang was tied for third in par-5 scoring (5-under par).
