Game Day Central: Old Dominion
The Flames will look to open a newly expanded Williams Stadium with a win when they welcome the Old Dominion Monarchs for their season opener on Saturday evening.
"4 Downs" with the Monarchs 1. Saturday's season opener will feature a number of "firsts." Liberty's first football game as an FBS member will see the Flames unveil a newly expanded Williams Stadium. Liberty will play host to an FBS opponent for the first time in program history. Old Dominion's inaugural visit to Lynchburg will mark Liberty's first-ever meeting with a Conference USA opponent. 2. Liberty will be facing Old Dominion for the second time in program history. The teams' previous meeting (Oct. 5, 2013) came during ODU's final season of FCS play before the Monarchs gained FBS status in 2014. The Flames are opening a season at Williams Stadium for just the second time in the last 10 years (also 2015). Liberty's first two home games of 2018 will be played against teams from Norfolk, as the Flames will host Norfolk State on Sept. 15. 3. Liberty is squaring off against an FBS team in its season opener for the third straight season and for the fifth time in seven years under Turner Gill. Beginning its 30th year of play at Williams Stadium, the Flames are in search of their third straight home win. Liberty won its final two home contests of 2017 (Duquesne and Presbyterian). 4. Liberty and Old Dominion are two of Virginia's four FBS football teams. ODU has played four seasons at the FBS level and is 4-0 in season openers as an FBS member. Liberty has opened the season at home against an in-state opponent on four previous occasions and is 4-0 in those contests. Saturday marks the first of Liberty's four home games against FBS opponents in 2018.
