As part of its coverage of Liberty's August Training Camp, LibertyFlames.com continues its position previews today talking about the Flames' linebackers position.
The Flames' linebackers will have a mixture of experienced and newer faces when they hit the field for Liberty's season opener against Old Dominion. Liberty will be looking to replace both its starting linebackers from 2017 following the graduation of Solomon McGinty and Jaylyn McKinney.
Moving over from safety to linebacker during the offseason was junior Brandon Tillmon, who finished last year ranked second on Liberty's roster with 60 tackles (38 solo, 22 assisted).
Tillmon is slated to start at the WILL linebacker position, while sophomore Remington Green opened preseason training camp as the starter at the MIKE linebacker position. Green gained value experience in 2017 as a reserve defender and a member of the Flames' special teams unit, ending the year with 11 tackles (four solo, seven assisted).
Redshirt senior David King brings senior leadership to the smaller defensive group. During the offseason, King was named one of Liberty's five team captains for 2018 after playing in 28 career games with 17 career tackles (five solo, 12 assisted).
Rise With Us: The Process
On Feb. 16, 2017, the NCAA approved Liberty's waiver request to begin the two-year FBS reclassification process. Liberty completed its final season as a FCS program in 2017, playing as a member of the Big South Conference.
The Flames will host their first FBS home game against Old Dominion on Sept. 1, the first of four FBS teams to visit Williams Stadium in 2018 to meet the FBS reclassification criteria. The 2018 home schedule also features FBS matchups against North Texas (Sept. 22), Troy (Oct. 13) and New Mexico State (Nov. 24).
In the event that Liberty is invited to the AutoNation Cure Bowl, Flames Club members will have priority for tickets and other associated events and privileges.
