Full 2018 Schedule A home match against Virginia, along with the team's inaugural ASUN Conference slate, highlight Liberty's 2018 volleyball schedule, released today by first-year Head Coach Trevor Johnson.
Due to the construction of Liberty's ASUN Conference schedule, along with four away tournaments, the Lady Flames will play 16 out of their first 17 matches away from the Vines Center.
Liberty will appear in tournaments at Purdue Fort Wayne, Rice, Maryland and SMU. This season's schedule features two opponents (Kennesaw State and LSU) which appeared in the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship and four (Colgate, Maryland Eastern Shore, Rice, SMU) who played in the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. A total of eight opponents on the schedule won 20 or more matches last season.
Liberty is scheduled to play 10 regular-season home matches. Lynchburg area fans can circle the entire month of October, as the Lady Flames will be at home for the full month, playing a program-record nine straight matches at the Vines Center. The ASUN conference schedule features double round robin play, so Liberty will face each of the other eight conference members both home and away. Regular-season play will be of much importance again this year, as only the top six teams qualify for the 2018 ASUN Volleyball Championship.
The season opens at the Fort Wayne Invitational presented by Hyatt Place, as Liberty takes on Indiana State, Oakland and the host Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Aug. 24-25. It will be Liberty's first trip to Indiana since competing at Notre Dame in 2008.
Liberty will fly to Texas to compete in the Rice Adidas Invitational I, Aug. 31 through Sept. 1. It will be the first time since 2004 that the Lady Flames have competed in Texas. The field includes South Carolina, Houston Baptist and Rice.
The first full weekend in September, Liberty is set to compete in the Maryland Invitational. The Lady Flames will meet South Carolina for the second week in a row, also facing Maryland for the second time in as many years.
Virginia visits the Vines Center on Sept. 11 for Liberty's home opener. Liberty defeated the Cavaliers, 3-2, on Sept. 23, 2014, in the teams' last meeting in Lynchburg.
Liberty wraps up regular-season tournament play at the SMU Doubletree Invitational, Sept.14-15, taking on LSU, SMU and Abilene Christian.
Liberty's conference schedule features a unique twist this season, opening with four straight away matches before spending the entire month of October playing home conference contests at the Vines Center. MEAC opponent Maryland Eastern Shore will play at Liberty on Oct. 23. Liberty will close out the ASUN slate in November with four away matches in a row. The Lady Flames open ASUN play in Jacksonville, Fla., taking on both North Florida (Sept. 21) and Jacksonville (Sept. 22). Liberty's first ASUN match at the Vines Center will be Oct. 5 against Lipscomb.
The 2018 ASUN Volleyball Championship will be a six-team tournament, held at KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw, Ga., Nov. 15-17. The winner of the ASUN Volleyball Championship will earn the ASUN's automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin on Nov. 29.
