Artis, Todd Selected to VaSID All-State Baseball Team

Flames outfielder D.J. Artis and outfielder/catcher Tre Todd have been named to the 2018 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Baseball Team, earlier today.

Artis, who finished his Liberty career by signing with the Chicago Cubs in June, has been named to the VaSID University Division All-State Baseball first team for the third consecutive season. He was also the VaSID Rookie of the Year in 2016.

Todd, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in June, saw action at catcher, outfield and designated hitter in his only season at Liberty and was selected to the first team as a utility player.

Artis etched his name in the program's record books during his three seasons at Liberty. The outfielder is one of three Flames with more than 200 hits, 165 runs scored and 65 stolen bases (Butler, 2000-02 and Monahan, 2000-02) during his career. In addition, he is one of only 21 Flames to collect 200 hits during his career.

The Greensboro, N.C., native closed out 2018 second all-time at Liberty in runs scored with 173 and tied for second all-time with 72 stolen bases. The outfielder led the Big South in runs scored each of the past two seasons, setting a career high with 61 this spring.

The outfielder finished his career as the Liberty program leader in walks with 166, 71 more than any player in school history. Artis led the nation with a program-record 62 bases on balls in 2017 and was among the top 10 in the country in walks each of his three seasons as a Flame.

As a junior in 2018, Artis hit .292 with 23 RBI and 61 runs scored in 58 games, earning his third selection to the Big South All-Conference first team. The outfielder led the Flames with 16 doubles and 26 stolen bases. He posted a .458 on base percentage, this past season, while posting the longest reached base safely streak in the past two years of 68 consecutive games.

Artis was selected in the seventh round of the MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. Currently, he is playing in the Arizona Rookie League with the team.

In his only season at Liberty, Todd earned Big South All-Conference first team honors as the team's utility player. Todd made starts in left field, at catcher and as the designated hitter for the Flames.

Todd, who also was named a 2018 ECAC first team outfielder, led Liberty with a .315 batting average in 2018 and was among the Big South leaders in several offensive categories. The junior finished the year second in RBI (52) and on base percentage (.479), while completing the season third in slugging percentage (.553), fourth in home runs (10), eighth in total bases (109) and ninth in runs scored (43). He also led the league in walks with 60, the second most in program history for a single season.

He led the Flames with 18 multi-hit games and 15 multi-RBI contests. He drove in three or more runs in seven games, this season.

Todd was selected in the 21st round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

VMI's Matt Pita was voted the VaSID State Player of the Year, while George Mason's Zach Mort was deemed the Pitcher of the Year. Virginia's Andrew Abbott nabbed the Rookie of the Year honor, while Richmond's Tracy Woodson was selected as the Coach of the Year
