Josh McDougal has been tabbed athlete of the week by the Big South Conference for the third time this year.

Liberty senior Josh McDougal, who opened his 2007-08 indoor track & field season with the nation's fastest 3,000 and 5,000-meter performances, has captured the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award, the conference office announced today.

McDougal (Peru, N.Y.) broke the Tolsma Indoor Track Center record at 5,000 meters on Dec. 1, winning the race in 13:45.16. His time is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.

The following day, McDougal came back and finished first in the 3,000-meter run, clocking a 7:57.90. The time, another facility record, earned him provisional qualification to the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The performances came less than two weeks after McDougal raced to his first NCAA national title, at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. A 12-time All-American, McDougal has garnered a trio of Big South Athlete of the Week honors this year. He was recognized twice during cross country season.

The Liberty men's and women's indoor track & field teams are currently in the midst of a break in their schedule. The Flames and Lady Flames will return to competition Jan. 11-12 at the Virginia Tech Invitational. The two-day meet will be held at Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg, Va.
