2018 Baseball Season Recap

With the Major League Baseball Draft putting a cap on the 2018 Liberty baseball season two weeks ago, LFSN's Nick Pierce was able to catch up with Flames' head coach Scott Jackson for a look back at the past season and look forward to next year.

In their second season under Jackson, the Flames posted a 32-26 overall record and finished third in the Big South regular season standings with a 17-10 mark.

After dropping their first game of the 2018 Big South Baseball Championship at Liberty Baseball Stadium, the Flames won three straight elimination games, before falling in an if  necessary game to move onto the title game against No. 1 seed and eventual Big South Champion Campbell.
 

Team/Program Highlights

  • The Flames won 30 or more games for the 14th straight season.
  • Liberty set new program single season records for
    • Walks (356)
    • Fewest errors (48)
    • Fielding percentage (.977).
  • The Flames finished their 2018 season, second national in bases on balls.
  • For the second consecutive year, the Flames led the Big South in runs scored (371) and walks. Liberty also led the conference in RBI (.322), doubles (104), triples (19) and on base percentage (.388).
  • Liberty had four players taken in the 2018 Major League Draft. The Flames have had a player selected in every MLB Draft since 2000

  • One of only two players in program history to record over 200 hits (211), 170 runs scored (172) and over 70 stolen bases (72) during his career (Joey Monahan – 2000-02; 2/171/85)

  • Second all-time in runs scored with 172 and stolen bases with 72
  • Program leader with 166 career walks
  • Had longest reached base safely streak in the past two years of 68 consecutive games
  • 1B/OF Andrew Yacyk joined the 100 RBI club, finishing his career with 100 RBI.
     
  • OF/C Tre Todd's 2018 walk total was the second most in program history. Only teammate D.J. Artis walked more, compiling 62 bases on balls in 2017. In his only season at Liberty, Todd led the Flames in batting average (.315), home runs (10), RBI (52), on base percentage (.579) and slugging percentage (.553) in 2018.
     
  • Liberty set a new regular season average attendance record at Liberty Baseball Stadium, drawing 1,759 per date in 2018.
