2018 Cross Country Schedule The 2018 Liberty cross country season will be one of transition, as the Flames will compete in the ASUN Conference for the first time and will be under the direction of first-year head coach Tim Sykes.
Brant Tolsma will remain on staff as Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, but Sykes will serve as Head Cross Country Coach.
Sykes' first meet as head coach will come at a familiar venue, as Liberty opens its season at the Aug. 31 Hokie Invite in Blacksburg, Va. Sykes served as a Virginia Tech volunteer assistant from 2007-10 and earned a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2011. The Flames will later return to Blacksburg for the low-key Hokie Open on Nov. 2.
For the first time, Winthrop will play host to the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships, Nov. 9 in Rock Hill, S.C. Liberty will preview the regional course at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational on Sept. 15. The Flames' last cross country race at Winthrop saw them sweep the 2012 Big South men's and women's team titles.
The Flames will make another visit to the Charlotte area on Sept. 28, taking part in the Queen City Invite.
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be contested in Madison, Wis., for the first time in 40 years on Nov. 17. Liberty will get its first look at the course on Oct. 13, facing some of the nation's top teams at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals.
Liberty's inaugural appearance at the ASUN Cross Country Championships will take place Oct. 26 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The Flames have not raced at the historic course since competing in the 2011 IC4A/ECAC Division I Cross Country Championships.
