Liberty Claims Record 14th Big South Sasser Cup

Final 2017-18 Sasser Cup Standings

For the third year in a row and the conference-record 14th time overall, Liberty earned the Big South Conference's George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup title, it was announced on Thursday.

"This has been another outstanding year of competition in the Big South. We are blessed to have won the Sasser Cup for the 14th time and captured seven conference championships. I am grateful for the strong commitment and support from President Falwell and the outstanding efforts of our coaches, staff and student-athletes. God has shown us much favor," said Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw.

Seven Flames teams captured Big South Conference championships during the 2017-18 athletics season, including men's golf, women's basketball, softball, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field. Additionally, the women's soccer squad shared the Big South regular-season title.

Liberty finished with an average of 8.85 points (159.25 points in 18 sports), winning the Sasser Cup by an average of 0.54 points over runner-up Campbell (8.31 average – 149.5 points in 18 sports).

The Flames finished second to High Point in the Big South Women's All-Sports Standings and were the runners-up behind Campbell in the Big South Men's All-Sports Standings.

The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system.

Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the league's 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport. One bonus point is added to the average total for each Conference Champion/AQ representative, as well as any teams that receive at-large NCAA Championships berths.

A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport championship to receive Sasser Cup points in that sport. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned.  Each member's overall point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
